Although electric water heaters are very popular and found in most homes, gas water heaters are also increasingly popular as well because of the money savings involved. Investing in a gas water heater can help reduce energy bills and give homeowners an efficient way to heat water. We often recommend upgrading to one, especially if you already have access to gas. Using gas to heat water is cheaper than using electricity.

Because natural gas is already used to power home appliances (including ovens, stoves, dryers, washers, and more) installing one can be a great option. They’re also a great option because they’re a lot more affordable. Propane and natural gas is less expensive to use than electricity. They also heat water faster than electric does.

How Do Gas Water Heaters Work?

Gas water heaters use convection. Convection is what governs the way heat rises to heat water. Inside gas water heaters the cold water enters the tank through a water line that constantly fills the tank when needed. At the bottom, gas burners underneath the water tank are used to heat up the cold water at the bottom of the tank as it comes in through the water line.

Once the water is heated, it flows back into the tank and is drawn out from the top for whenever it’s needed in the home or building. Because the system funnels the hottest water from the top of the tank, the unit’s outlet pipe is shorter than the unit’s dip tube. On the sides of the unit, gas water heaters have several parts. These parts include relief valves, check valves, overflow tubes, air inlet hoods, and gas shutoff valves. These parts control the gas burner and regulate the process. They are what controls how and when the water heater heats up the cold water that comes in. Gas water heaters also use an internal thermostat to measure the temperature of the water inside the tank. It is what turns off and on the burner when it’s hot to keep the set water temperature.

Benefits of Gas Water Heater Installation

Gas water heaters usually cost a bit more to install than an electric water heaters. However, they can end up saving you money over time because using gas to heat water is a far better fuel source. Truthfully, it all boils down to how your home was built and whether or not you already have access to gas for other appliances. If you don’t and you require evasive changes to your home to vent the gas, the installation will take longer. In any case, with water heating accounting for about 20% of the average utility bill throughout the year, switching to a gas water heater has many benefits. Our gas water heater experts here at Miamisburg Plumbing & Drain explain those benefits in the following.

Gas Water Heaters

More affordable energy

Energy-efficient gas water heaters have a wide range of benefits. However, it is essential you hire an expert like Miamisburg Plumbing & Drain to find the most cost-efficient option for your home and perform the installation properly in order to enjoy those benefits. Although you are likely to have to spend more money on the installation if you aren’t set up for gas already, overall it will reduce your electric bill by hundreds of per year. If you’re trying to find the most energy-efficient water heater available on the market, you should install a gas water heater or a tankless gas water heater.

Better flow rates in gas water heaters

Gas water heaters have a much higher flow rate than electric. This is great for tankless water heaters because their flow rates can be an issue. The way to solve this issue is to get a tankless gas water heater. Typically, a 70ºF water temperature rise is possible at a flow rate of five gallons per minute if you have a gas-fired on demand water heater. This is compared to only two gallons per minute through an electric one. Faster flow rates or cooler inlet temperatures can sometimes reduce the water temperature at the most distant faucet.

Less Maintenance

Higher Efficiency

Higher efficiency, cost and convenience are a few of the benefits of using natural gas to heat your home’s water. It is cheaper than electricity and natural gas is more reliable. If there’s ever any sort of power outage, the good news is that your gas supply will be unaffected. What’s even nicer is that when the tank runs out of hot water, gas water heaters heat up a new fresh tank of hot water a lot faster than electric water heaters. However, keep in mind that some gas water heaters require a pilot light to start the flame. Pilot lights are known to add to the overall operating costs. For the most cost-efficient gas water heater available on the market, purchase one that doesn’t have a pilot light that’s constantly burning.

Water Softeners

Condensing water heaters

A condensing storage water heater uses condensers to increase the efficiency of a traditional water heater with tank. These models have higher efficiency ratings than conventional tankless water heaters with offer benefits of a storage tank water heater. Condensing water heaters heat cold water by sending it over a heating coil. These types of water heaters are great for households that have storage tanks bigger than 55 gallons.  Installing a new water heater is a major investment. By purchasing a gas water heater, you can recover your initial costs in energy savings over time. You can also improve the hot water supply for your household’s needs.

Why does my water heater leak?

Any sort of water leaks at the bottom of a water heater’s tank will need to be fixed. If not repaired, it might need replacement. Leaks can come from the unit’s drain valve or from the tank itself. Problems with drain valves typically need tightened. If your water heater’s tank is what’s causing the leak, the entire thing will probably need to be replaced. If this is the case, the cost for tank replacement can be expensive. Of all the problems that can cause a water heater to leak, the most common is a defective cold and hot water connections. Additionally, there are loose gaskets, damaged drain valves, and corrosion inside the tank. Some of these problems only require tightening or updating to get your water heater back to full functionality.

Why am I running out of hot water?

There are several reasons why a water heater would fail to produce enough hot water. The unit could be too small. The settings on the system might be wrong. There could also be a much more serious problem. If sediment has built up, it needs addressed and flushed out. If you have broken dip tubes or heating elements or hot water leaks, all of these can all steal your hot water away.  If you’re having an issue with a gas water heater that’s not producing enough hot water, you need to make sure you have plenty of gas as well. Our water heater experts can come over quickly to help you figure out if there’s any obstructions in the gas main or any sort of deficit.

What size water heater do I need?

On average, it takes at most two gallons of hot water to wash hands. Running the dishwasher, on average, takes up about 14 gallons. The average bath or shower is 20 gallons. Washing a load of laundry uses on average 30 gallons. With this in mind, if you have a family of four, a 50-gallon water tank should cover all these showers and washings in a 24-hour period. If you have a larger family, you probably want to get a larger tank.
